Meet Brian Colón

Democrat for Attorney General

Raised in Los Lunas, Bosque Farms, and Albuquerque, Democrat Brian Colón’s commitment to New Mexico families runs deep. Like so many children in New Mexico, he grew up in poverty. Brian lost his father as a teenager, and so while he was the first in his family to go to college, and then law school, he also served as a protector for his mother, little brother and sister. It is this life experience that has driven him to dedicate his life to helping cultural and community-focused nonprofits raise money and has assisted hundreds of New Mexico youth to find the right jobs and careers for their futures. Brian has been called a “force” because of his ability to inspire others to get involved.

Brian graduated from New Mexico State University with a bachelor’s degree in Finance and went on to earn a law degree from the University of New Mexico School of Law. Brian has been named Outstanding Young Lawyer of the Year by the State Bar of New Mexico, served on the New Mexico Hispanic Bar Association’s Board of Directors since 2001, and was twice appointed by the New Mexico Supreme Court as a Commissioner for the Judicial Selection Commission. He also served as the Chairman of the Democratic Party of New Mexico and won two decisive statewide Democratic primaries and a general election.

For more than 24 years, Brian has been married to Aleli Colón, an educator at Van Buren Middle School in Albuquerque’s International District. Their son, Rafael, is a graduate of Albuquerque High School, recently completed a biomedical engineering degree and works at a local biomedical engineering firm in Albuquerque.
